2. TV headphones for whichever one turns it up

Hearing loss distorts sound, so turning the TV up doesn't make it clearer. It just drives the other one out of the room. Wireless headphones fix it for both. Skip them if nobody has complained about the volume.

3. Their favorite Christmas film on DVD

Ask which one they watch every year and buy it on disc for the player they already own. Two people, one sofa, one evening. Skip it if the player has stopped working; streaming setup is a chore you'd be giving them.

4. Their Christmas cards, addressed and stamped

Get their list in November, buy cards they like, and address and stamp every envelope. They sit down together to sign and add a line, and nobody queues at the post office.

A gift for the house never has to be split. Each of these fixes one small thing that got harder, and you can fit most of them yourself while you're there.

5. An under-cabinet jar opener

It screws under a kitchen cupboard and grips the lid, so both hands go on the jar. Fit it yourself on Christmas Day. Skip it if they'd hear it as a comment on their hands.

6. A step stool with a tall handle

So nobody climbs on a kitchen chair to reach the top shelf or the star on the tree. Look for a grab bar at hip height and wide, grippy steps.

7. A plug-in doorbell chime that flashes

When one of them stops hearing the door, the other becomes the doorbell. A wireless chime with a flashing light, plugged in where they sit, fixes it for both.

8. Brighter bulbs in the lamps they read by

Reading gets harder in dim light as eyes age. Swap the bulbs in their reading lamps for brighter LEDs in the warmth they like. Check each lamp's maximum first.

9. A lit house number by the road

Delivery drivers, visitors and, if it's ever needed, an ambulance all have to find the house after dark. A solar or wired lit number belongs to the address, not to either of them.

Pick an evening, bring a thermos of cocoa, and do the driving so neither of them is on the road after dark. It costs a tank of gas and a few hours.

11. A lift to the Christmas Eve carol service, and a seat beside them

Pick them up, drop them at the door, park, and save an aisle seat. Getting there in the dark is usually what keeps them home, so that's the part you handle.

12. Carolers at their front door

Church and community choirs go caroling in December, and some will add a stop if you ask. Book one to sing at their door one evening. They hear it from their own hallway.

13. A holiday train ride with the grandchildren

Heritage railways in many states run Christmas trains in December. Book seats for everyone, grandparents included, and watch the kids rather than the scenery. Skip it if the platform wait is long and cold.

A hallway light that comes on by itself when the power goes

It lights a hallway at dusk, comes on by itself in a power cut, and pulls out of the wall as a flashlight. Buy two, for wherever they walk at night.

Why it works

It serves whoever is walking past, and it removes the worst part of a power cut: crossing a dark landing to find a flashlight that's in a drawer somewhere.

Skip it if

you want one light for the whole house. It covers one hallway, and the battery isn't replaceable.

A printed 4x6 photo postcard from your own photos

Put up to four family photos on the front and a few lines to both of them on the back. You see the finished card before you pay, then we print and mail it.

Why it works

Ask the staff what's allowed before you buy, because rules differ by home. Candles, extension cords and electric blankets are banned in many.

17. A small tabletop tree with steady battery lights

No cord to trip on, no flame, and it fits on a windowsill. Pick lights that don't blink, since blinking can confuse someone with dementia, and label the tree with their name.

18. A seat beside them at the holiday meal

If the home hosts a Christmas lunch, ask early whether family can book a place. Eating with them gives them the day itself, not one more thing to find room for.

19. Rides for the one still at home

When one grandparent moves into care, the other usually does the visiting. Prepaid rides, or a standing lift from family, keep those visits going through a winter of bad roads.

20. A phone with photo buttons

Each big button carries a picture of someone: press the face and it calls them. Set it up before Christmas and check the room has a line or signal. Skip it for later-stage dementia.

What not to buy grandparents for Christmas

• Anything they have to administer. A digital photo frame works when somebody else loads it every week. Without that, and without Wi-Fi, it shows the same eleven photos until someone unplugs it.
• Two of something, to be fair. Matching parcels invite the comparison you were trying to avoid. Buy one thing they both use.
• Scented gift sets. They get thrown out more than anything else in the category, often because of a fragrance allergy rather than taste.
• Hand weights, or anything that needs a strong grip, for someone who "doesn't knit anymore". That word usually means stiff hands.

For Christmas 2026, USPS recommends mailing First-Class by December 17 in the lower 48 states. That's their advice, not a promise, and December runs slow.
